Terroir – all about the land

TERROIR

TERROIR

A great wine is born in the vineyard and reflects the characteristics of its terroir. It is a TRUE SENSE OF PLACE eager to be released from a bottle.

Quinta do Pôpa is located in the northeast of Portugal, DOC region of the Douro Valley, surrounded by mountains that give it particular climatic characteristics. The Douro extends over 250,000 ha, divided into three naturally distinct sub-regions due to climatic and socio-economic factors.

Quinta is established on the Douro river’s left hand in the Cima Corgo sub-region. The amount of rainfall is lower, making more concentrated, rich, and elegant wines with tremendous aging potential. It is not by chance that the leading port wine houses are located in Cima Corgo. This noble sub-region has specific terroir factors: old vineyards, with a more efficient location, altitude, and exposure in terms of sunshine and winds. Regarding the soil, Quinta do Pôpa is formed of schist, very rich in nutrients, and with beneficial water retention properties. The crevices of the laminated pieces of schist retain a certain amount of moisture, sufficient to allow the vine to survive in the dry conditions that prevail during most of the summer.
