SCHIST SOIL

The location of SALA DO TEMPO was chosen on purpose, not only because it allows us to transfer wine in gravity without the use of pumps but also because of its natural schist walls.

Shist is extremely important for the Douro people. It was mainly because of that unique rock that the borders of the demarcated Douro region were demarcated in 1756. It is, in fact, the natural element that cuts across all sub-regions.

It is very rich in nutrients and has beneficial water retention properties. The crevices of the laminated pieces of schist retain a certain amount of moisture, sufficient to allow the vine to survive in the dry conditions that prevail during most of the summer. And in buildings, it helps us regulate the temperature, excluding the majority of the day the use of electric refrigeration.
